Destin, Florida
We begin our travels to white sand beaches without ever having to leave the United States. Here in Destin, you will find these beautiful white sand beaches and that crystal blue-green water. Known as the, “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin is the city with the biggest group of fishing boats in the state of Florida. Not only do they have great fishing, it is known for other water activities like scuba diving and snorkeling.
History
Destin was established in the mid-1800s and named after a Connecticut fishing captain, Leonard Destin. The city is found on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and the Choctawhatchee Bay, and used to be an island until being hit with hurricanes and sea level changes merged it to the mainland. The beautiful white sand you see in photos, actually came from the Appalachian Mountain range during the Ice Age. The sand itself is actually quartz crystal ground down due to the waves and tides over the years.
In 1984, Destin was incorporated from a small fishing village into a municipality. If you’re interested in learning more about the city’s history during your visit, check out Destin’s History and Fishing Museum. There you will discover how fishing there started with just seine nets, progressed to rods and reels, and eventually became the biggest fishing fleet city in Florida.
6 Reasons Why You Should Visit:
- White sand beaches and crystal-clear water without a passport
- Deep sea fishing
- 30A: Rent or buy a house in this paradise of a community where you see more bikes than cars riding around
- Crab Island: Tie up your boat in knee-deep water on the sandbar for a fun and relaxing day out
- Watersports: Pirate ships, water-skiing, dolphin cruises, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and more
- Big Kahuna’s: Destin’s one and only waterpark for the last 25 years
When planning your trip, keep in mind peak times during the year are October and May. The weather is warm, and water temperatures are good for swimming, but you will still be in on all of the entertainment and fun Destin has to offer. I grew up going to Panama City Beach and Destin as a kid, so it has been great to make that a family tradition now.
Happy Travels!
