Legends of Devil’s Tower

It all began with the Native Americans and their history of sacred stories that have been passed down over centuries. They are a traditional part of their culture, and even though certain parts of those stories may be told a little different, they’re all about the same and are still told today!

In the legend that is told by the Sioux tribe, there were two boy who got lost on their way home through the prairie. As the boys continued their journey, they realized they were being followed by a giant bear called Mato. They ran as long as they could but weren’t able to find somewhere to hide and dropped to their knees to pray to the Great Spirit begging to be saved. All of a sudden, the ground started to shake, and the boys were lifted off of the ground by a giant rock formation. Not giving up, Mato stood up on his hind legs scratching huge lines into the stone as he tried to climb up making huge cracks and striations. However, he was not able to catch them as many times as he tried on different sides of the mountain. \

Eventually Mato left tired from his efforts and defeated as the two boys stayed on top of the mountain scared and alone. The story ends with the two boys being carried by a giant eagle, Wanblee, back to their village. It is the image of the bear that gave the monument its name meaning, “Bear Lodge” by the Native American tribes that still has significance today.
